Summertime and The Livin’ Is Easy

There’s something about summer that forces everything to become a bit more laid back—including my style. I can’t deal with anything fussy when the temps go up.

You can’t go wrong with a white tee and boyfriend jeans, but you can make it a bit more polished with your accessories like a bright structured bag, wedges, sunglasses, and a scarf or headband. When you mix simple gold accessories like April Soderstrom’s featherweight hoop earrings, it almost seems effortless.

STYLIST TIP: While I’m not a hair stylist, I’ve been asked many times on set to fix the talent’s hair when a hair stylist is not on hand. I’ve learned this easy hair trick from the pros:

1. Pull the hair back into a ponytail and secure with a clear elastic or one that matches one’s hair color.

2. Then take a piece of the hair and wrap it around the elastic until it’s covered.

3. Secure with u-shaped bobby-pins and you instantly have a polished summer hair style. Add a scarf or turban headband to combat the humidity and frizz.

#FridayFavorites / The PERFECT Accessory

Is it too dramatic to say these headphones may have changed my life? Well, they have. These Coloud headphones just arrived yesterday and I’ve been attached to them already after having some bad breakups with headphones over the years.

There was the ex-headphones that get into such a tangled mess that I spend more time fussing with them than actually using them. Then there were the headphones that the ear buds popped off and got lost so many times that I couldn’t handle it. Most recently there were the ones that shorted out on a Jet Blue flight and left me with only one ear to listen out of.

Finally the prince charming of headphones has come into my life. The flat wire design makes it great to throw in my bag and not worry about it tangling—and they even can be wrapped and secured into that triangle “lasso” to keep them neat.

The ear buds are incredibly comfortable and tune out all of the sounds around you which is great until I was so tuned into a story on “This American Life” on the subway that I nearly missed my stop last night! There are a ton of other features like that 1-click microphone that’s perfect for all of my conference calls on the iPhone.

Of course the bonus is that they’re pretty fashionable and stylist-approved!

Twistband peace headband on Dear Andi

I’m a big fan of Twistband hair ties, which are so much better to have on your wrist than a drugstore hair band and don’t rip your hair out at the same time. So when a set of Twistband headbands arrived in a package yesterday, I was ecstatic.

I do a lot of yoga and in the past couple of years having bangs, it’s been kind of a nuisance. If I put a clip at the top of my head, I can’t do a headstand. I’ve had other headbands slip off mid-vinyasa. These bands are the perfect—most importantly stylish—solution to keeping my hair back while I’m working out. They also don’t put a dent in your hair when you take them off, so they won’t put a dent in your day!

An added bonus to this design is the adorable peace charm they added. Now I’ll be totally peacefully zen and stylish in my next yoga class.

When I met with the jewelry designer April Soderstrom last week, she showed me hear new “featherweight” earring collection. It’s essentially 14 kt gold filled wire made into hoop earrings, but there’s something so chic about the simplicity of these “fish” earrings that slip into your ears without any fuss.

They’re so light that I’ve forgotten that I had them in when I was wearing them and they’re so delicate that they were the perfect jewelry to complement a designers dress I wore to an event last night without distracting from it. These are really the perfect every day and any occasion earrings that every woman should have in her jewelry ammo.

April In The Summer

I’ve been following April Soderstrom jewelry ever since one of my favorite publicists, Lacey Wilson-Bates, told me that I MUST check out this new designer for a shoot I was working on. She was right. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Her pieces are so unique and are show-stopping, like this former Miss Massachusetts contestant. Check out that fun pre-curated bracelet stack I tried on.

I met with both April and Lacey on the patio of the Grand Hyatt to see her new collection that all of the big publications were going crazy over this week.

All of April’s designs are hand made and one of a kind, so they’re like nothing else you’ve seen. You can see by the gasp on my face how amazed I was at the details like vintage beads from the 50′s and even her signature skulls hidden throughout her pieces to give it a bit of an edge. This one she dubbed the “Industrial Revolution” necklace.

IMG_1535 Her fall collection of stack-able bracelets and cuffs are actually great for all year-round and her earrings give the perfect amount of sparkle for a special event or even wedding—I suspect inspired by her pageant days.

Much of April’s collection is so wearable that you can just throw it on with nearly anything you’re wearing—the perfect everyday jewelry!

Though, the stand out pieces for me are the ones that you can tell there is a lot of skill that went into them like this hand woven beaded necklace and all of her pieces that are intricately hand sewn with beads and gems.

Lacey beautifully modeled some of my favorite stack-able cuffs that are leather with wire wrap and embellished with careful bead work.

Of course anything looks good on a couple of ladies that were vying for Miss America, but April’s pieces are versatile enough if you’re looking to accessorize with the every day jeans and a t-shirt, or that statement piece that’s perfect for not only pageants (she rents for that!), weddings, and other other special occasions.
