{Travel Diary} The Pacific Northwest

As if traveling to the other side of the world wasn’t enough this summer, I took a quick trip across the country to visit my friend who just had a baby in Portland, Oregon and therefore had a little adventure in Pacific Northwest.

While I’ve done the must-see things as a tourist in Portland like hike in Forest Park, admire the International Test Rose Garden and Lan Su Chinese Garden, spend time in the largest book store, Powells, wait in line for an hour just to get Voodoo Donuts, lunch at the food carts, and get the original Stumptown coffee, we decided to try some new things, including other coffee at Water Street Coffee (also good!).

Doughnuts are the new cupcake in Portland—and definitely meant to split to try all of the fun flavors. Voodoo is the most famous doughnut shop there, but this trip we did as the locals do and tried Bluestar donuts, which had some of the most exciting flavors like including blueberry bourbon basil.

After traveling across the world this summer, it took flying 30,000 feet over Portland to realize how magical some of our own country is.

We took a road trip to Washington, which was surprisingly mostly desert through the middle and what little forest we saw was sadly on fire. On the bright side, we managed to get past the smoke and watch a beautiful sunset over the gorge next to Arcade Fire in concert. We laid on the grass and watched the stars, something us city folk don’t see often, and enjoyed the show that way.

We stumbled upon the Renegade Craft Fair and found some amazing local designers and artists braving the oddly hot day for the Pacific Northwest.

One of my favorites there happened to be a jewelry line called Dea Dia, which won me over with their beautiful recycled brass cuffs with raw crystals on it. I had a stack of them on one arm and was so tempted to buy them all. I’m kicking myself for not purchasing just one of these one-of-a-kind cuffs.

Another tempting purchase was the most adorable cat food bowl I’ve ever seen by Cinder Ceramics, complete with golden fish scales and a fish in the inside. The designer told me she just sold the other half of the set, which houses the water and a fish actually moves around in it.

Below are more of my picks from these talented Portland designers. Click on the image below to shop their sites:

And The Winner Is…

As you already saw here and here, I recently teamed up with Mavi‘s flagship store in Brooklyn for a competition to find a local artist to give their touch to the side of the store on the intersection of 5th Avenue and Union in the iconic neighborhood of Park Slope.

My college roommate and now Brooklyn neighbor, Kate of the creative DIY blog Brooklyn Belltower, entered the contest upon seeing my post. It’s no wonder why she was selected by a prestigious panel of judges, including the borough president, editor in chief of Brooklyn Magazine and the curator of exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum.

Kate whipped up this mural based on her artwork in less than a week, in time for the big unveiling at the store’s family-friendly block party this past weekend. She’s still putting the finishing touches on her work this week, so if you’re local, be sure to stop by and check it out. You may even catch her in action getting a perfect splatter of paint on her new Mavi jeans authentically unlike some other jeans are actually being sold right now. Maybe Kate can splatter some paint on your new Mavi jeans to get the same look for less!

Can we talk about how adorable the outfit is that Kate got to pick out from the store? I had no idea that Mavi had cute tops like that in addition to their jeans. I guess I’m going to have to go back to get a top for my overalls!

What Do Denim + Art + Brooklyn + Your Weekend Plans All Have In Common?

As you probably know by now, I’m kind of in love with my home, Brooklyn.

I love that it’s a beautiful escape from my days spent running around Manhattan. I love that everyone here is creative in their profession, hobbies and even their style, not to mention all of the great shopping. There’s always something to do, new restaurants to try, local events and celebrations, and a lot of hometown pride. It’s no wonder that Brooklyn has had quite the renaissance the past few years.

It’s perfect that one of my favorite brands, Mavi, is making their comeback in an area that’s also having a resurgence. Mavi asked me recently to ask all of you “What’s YOUR Brooklyn?” and the winner’s art would be turned into a mural by the flagship Mavi boutique in Park Slope. I didn’t get to select the winner, but coincidentally my extremely talented artist friend/college roommate/neighbor, Kate Wilkes, won this competition.

This is just a small example of the artist’s work, which you may recognize from around Brooklyn and even hanging in my apartment. Check out #WHATSYOURBROOKLYN @MAVIUSA @BROOKLYNBELLTOWER on Instagram to get a sneak peek and join me for this fun weekend event below.

I’ll be wearing my favorite Mavi overalls and will see you there!

6 Items You’ll Want In Your Closet For Confusing Weather

It’s finally starting to feel like spring around here in NYC—only a couple of months late—so I was so excited to start breaking out the warm weather gear.

At the same time. it felt like I completely forgot how to dress for this season, as we’ve been jumping from freezing winter weather to summer in a flash the past few years. It also doesn’t help that living in a city, I can’t just throw extra clothing in a car. I have to plan for 50 degree mornings, 70 degree afternoons and 60 degree evenings, like case in point with this outfit that took me from morning to evening.

In case you’re struggling with the transition and are like me, the Goldilocks of wardrobe (too hot, too cold), here’s a checklist of items you will need to get through the season until the sweltering heat kicks in:

→ A fitted denim jacket that’s not too long and just the perfect amount of worn in

→ A good pair of ankle boots that can be worn with a dress or shorts

→ A gauzy cotton scarf that is long enough to wrap around a few times

→ Peds (low socks that aren’t noticeable) to wear so it looks like you’re sockless, but your toes will be warm

→ A neutral and well tailored trench or lightweight jacket that matches everything

5 Ways How To Wear Overalls (And Still Feel Like An Adult)

I normally live by my stylist sister’s motto of “if I wore the trend the first time around, I probably shouldn’t the second time around!” I felt the same way when I saw that overalls were making a comeback this season.

It brought me back to the days when we emulated the style of TLC and wore them three sizes too big with one strap down and an equally baggy t-shirt probably with some Looney Tunes character on it. What were we thinking?

It also brought me back to my OshKosh-B’gosh days when I had a pink corduroy pair and a doll with the same pair to match. I didn’t want to feel like I was reliving either period of my youth when I saw this trend hitting the streets this spring.

I had these thoughts until Mavi sent me their lookbook and spotted a pair of overalls that actually looked good and made me forget about the first couple of times I wore this trend. How could something that made me cringe look so cute?

These are 5 ways to wear overalls without feeling like a kid:

1. Look for a slimmer cut with a skinnier leg, which is more flattering.

2. Cuff them and show off a little ankle so they don’t make you appear shorter.

3. Elongate with a little heel.

4. Keep it simple, like with a basic tee.

5. Top it off with a sophisticated blazer or leather jacket
