How To Throw A White Party (Brooklyn) P. Diddy Style

My good friend Kate of Brooklyn Belltower asked me to join her for a white-themed pop-up dinner party in Prospect Park, Brooklyn this past weekend and I nearly scoffed at the idea of paying for a table to picnic and bring all your own food and decor.

Then I found out the proceeds went to the NYC Parks, to improve our beloved park and one of my favorite songwriters of all time, Ben Folds would serenade us after dinner. We also got to get creative with our table, so I was sold. Did I mention, we were front row to see Ben Folds perform because there wasn’t a bad seat in the house?dear_andi_white_party_2

Kate and I got crafty and hand-made our center pieces. Kate collected sticks in the park earlier that day and painted them white. We painted bottles white to place them in for a monochromatic look.

Kate found our linens and plates from various affordable stores like Target and I scored white fans for only $1 from Pearl River in SoHo. I also collected jars and various candle holders from my backyard to paint white and put battery operated tea light candles in, also from Pearl River. Kate cleverly painted our Instagram names on charger plates en lieu of place cards.

My truffle oil popcorn is always a big hit at parties and worked nicely with the white colored theme. It also happens to be VERY easy.

1 cup of popping kernels (NOT microwave popcorn!)

safflower oil, or another cooking oil

truffle or truffle-infused oil

fine sea salt

-Fill the bottom of a large pot with a layer of kernels

-Coat with a layer of cooking oil

-Heat on high heat and wait until the pops go from pop, pop, pop to pop…pop…

-Remove from heat and let cool

-Drizzle with olive oil, a few drops of truffle or truffle-infused oil and add sea salt to taste.

-Enjoy and let your friends marvel as they can’t stop eating this delicious snack!

White beans and potatoes were in line with the white theme, but we couldn’t resist having some greens and a yummy salmon cake (from Whole Foods).

I made white sangria to go with the theme, which was also easy to make and a big hit. Here’s my recipe:

1 bottle of white wine (ideally Spanish, but any dryer wine will do)

Triple sec

white grapes

1 Green Anjou pear

Sparkling water or club soda

Combine wine and 1/4 cup of triple sec. Wash fruit and mint. Slice grapes in half, dice pear, and remove thick stems from a handful of mint and add to the wine. Let sit in the refrigerator and add 1 – 2 cups of soda water (to taste) just before serving.

Desserts from Steve’s Key Lime Pie and Larry’s rugelach from Court Street Grocers went quickly and shared with other guests we met (spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way!).

6 Must-Haves For A Stylish & Patriotic 4th of July

4th of July Must Haves

The 4th of July is just one week away and maybe it’s all of the World Cup fever that has me wanting to shout ‘Merica, or maybe, just maybe, it’s an excuse to coordinate some red, white and blue in my wardrobe. Whatever it is, you’re going to want these fun pieces to represent our independence…or at least our right to BBQ and enjoy the summer.

1 – Baublebar bracelet

2 – Nation LTD sleeveless muscle t shirt

3 – TOMS shoes

4 – T By Alexander Wang one piece swimwear

5 – J.Crew beach towel

6 – Mink Pink shorts

And The Winner Is…

As you already saw here and here, I recently teamed up with Mavi‘s flagship store in Brooklyn for a competition to find a local artist to give their touch to the side of the store on the intersection of 5th Avenue and Union in the iconic neighborhood of Park Slope.

My college roommate and now Brooklyn neighbor, Kate of the creative DIY blog Brooklyn Belltower, entered the contest upon seeing my post. It’s no wonder why she was selected by a prestigious panel of judges, including the borough president, editor in chief of Brooklyn Magazine and the curator of exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum.

Kate whipped up this mural based on her artwork in less than a week, in time for the big unveiling at the store’s family-friendly block party this past weekend. She’s still putting the finishing touches on her work this week, so if you’re local, be sure to stop by and check it out. You may even catch her in action getting a perfect splatter of paint on her new Mavi jeans authentically unlike some other jeans are actually being sold right now. Maybe Kate can splatter some paint on your new Mavi jeans to get the same look for less!

Can we talk about how adorable the outfit is that Kate got to pick out from the store? I had no idea that Mavi had cute tops like that in addition to their jeans. I guess I’m going to have to go back to get a top for my overalls!

How To Insta-Tailor A Dress Without A Tailor

Do you ever find a dress you love, but something’s just slightly off? I always recommend to spend a few extra bucks on getting your wardrobe tailored. Even if you’re buying “fast fashion,” it could get mistaken for a designer piece if you just have it fit to you (this dress got mistaken for Phillip Lim the other night!).

In this case, this dress was just a slightly awkward length on me—not quite a maxi and not quite a flattering tea length—so I nearly returned it after falling in love with it when I found it for a recent advertising photo shoot. Then in a pinch with nothing to wear to my friend Emily‘s birthday shindig at a swanky members-only spot in Manhattan, I tried my styling trick of creating a waistband with a belt.

STYLIST TIP: Add a skinny belt to the waistband of your dress if it’s seamless and doesn’t already have a waistband. Then pull a little bit of fabric to blouse over it. Insta-waist and insta-tailored!

Check out how easy it is to do and what a difference it made below.

What Do Denim + Art + Brooklyn + Your Weekend Plans All Have In Common?

As you probably know by now, I’m kind of in love with my home, Brooklyn.

I love that it’s a beautiful escape from my days spent running around Manhattan. I love that everyone here is creative in their profession, hobbies and even their style, not to mention all of the great shopping. There’s always something to do, new restaurants to try, local events and celebrations, and a lot of hometown pride. It’s no wonder that Brooklyn has had quite the renaissance the past few years.

It’s perfect that one of my favorite brands, Mavi, is making their comeback in an area that’s also having a resurgence. Mavi asked me recently to ask all of you “What’s YOUR Brooklyn?” and the winner’s art would be turned into a mural by the flagship Mavi boutique in Park Slope. I didn’t get to select the winner, but coincidentally my extremely talented artist friend/college roommate/neighbor, Kate Wilkes, won this competition.

This is just a small example of the artist’s work, which you may recognize from around Brooklyn and even hanging in my apartment. Check out #WHATSYOURBROOKLYN @MAVIUSA @BROOKLYNBELLTOWER on Instagram to get a sneak peek and join me for this fun weekend event below.

I’ll be wearing my favorite Mavi overalls and will see you there!
