#FashionFlashbackFriday Athletic Style

Vogue cover circa 1940′s via Conde Nast

I remember coming across this Vogue cover back when I was an intern at a fashion company and studying graphic design at the same time. The image has stuck with me since. It was definitely was ahead of its time, with not only making a visually graphic image with minimal type, but it also showed the beauty of women being athletic and simultaneously looking good.

While styling athletes on a shoot for Reebok this week, I was blown away at how the female athletes managed to look great as they were breaking a sweat—and still smiling. Somehow they even managed to be conscious of the wardrobe (tugging down on the shirts, moving the hair away from the logo), which was the focus of the shoot of course.

Unlike the women on the shoot, the male athletes looked like they were in pain the whole time and I seemed to have to keep an eye on their wardrobe the most, which I ended up basically taping them into.

Not to be all Spice Girls on you, but um, girl power!

Behind The Scenes

Now that I’m able to share with you the Boston Weddings photo shoot that just came out this week, I can finally share the behind-the-scenes shots with you. It’s probably what you REALLY wanted to see anyway; highlights of gorgeous pieces from Ippolita, Nina, Rachel Zoe, Manolo Blahnik, Brian Atwood, Christian Louboutin, Lela Rose, Marco Bicego, Lyra Lovestar and Erickson Beamon…just to name a few.

Bridal shoots are some of the most fun to work on because it’s like fulfilling a childhood fantasy of planning a dream wedding—an expensive one too—and there’s no commitment to it!

I’m not one usually for hot pink, but when the editor, Courtney mailed me a bunch of Pantone swatches that we were working with, I was sold. I wished I incorporated more color into my wardrobe on my own special day after seeing all of the fun combos that looked great with the modern gowns.

I’m also not typically a modern gown gal or into veils, but I was loving some of the fresh looks like the Monique Lhuillier and Angel Sanchez gowns we featured above, along with the crisp horsehair veil.

Of course, the jewelry was some of my favorite wardrobe items to play with—except for the $100k sapphire ring that I had to have someone watch at all times!

STYLIST TIP: Have a bit of fun with jewelry too and think outside the box. I styled a gorgeous floral necklace on the cover as a hair piece that our talented hair stylist pinned to a modern-retro up-do. I also used a beaded necklace with ribbon as a belt on the grey Vera Wang White bridesmaid dress.

Shopping At Home

1 – I went “shopping” in my father’s closet over Thanksgiving when I went home. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

2 -He hung onto this shirt from the 70′s “just in case he had a Western-themed party to go to.” Good thing because I’ve been drooling over the Isabel Marant version for a while now.

3 – I scored this sweet belt also from circa 1970′s-80′s in his closet too. I love that he showed me that there’s a zipper inside the leather to store money and whatnot.

4 – Of course I still had to look cute while cooking up a storm. I found this handmade apron at The Market NYC years ago and it’s not only saved my wardrobe, but looks great with my mixed patterns.

Cyber Monday Roundup

The last thing I want to do—believe it or not—is go shopping in a store.

I’m constantly shopping in stores for the photoshoots that I work on, so unless I’m on a mission for a particular item, I avoid shopping in stores like the plague. Cyber Monday has been a nice alternative for my the last few years to score those holiday deals for all of my gifts without stepping foot into a store.

Ironically, I will be in stores all day today for work anyway, but here are some of the Cyber Monday Deals that I will be coveting for both gifts and myself today instead:

Vanessa Mooney is the epitome of cool accessories for those like me that love anything that’s rock n’ roll meets boho style. Jewelry also always makes a great gift and really, no girl can ever have enough. Use promo code: 40OFF

Lands End Canvas (and Lands End) is one of my go-to sources for my wardrobe basics and often for gifts for everyone in the family. This season, you’ll find their basics are beyond, well, basic. Use promo code: THANKFUL

Shopbop is basically my wishlist for my dream wardrobe. It’s also a great source for a one-stop shop for all of your gifts today with designer finds up that are up to 35% off. Maybe when I’m done with my holiday shopping I will break down and finally splurge on the bag I’ve been eyeing. Use promo code: BIGEVENT12

Sephora is one of my favorite places to get gifts, because everyone loves to be pampered—and better yet, get some free gifts or samples at the same time. This Cyber Monday, enjoy free shipping and free gifts. Use promo codes: SHIPNOW and UNDERWRAPS

Happy shopping!
